ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

Absences
Good attendance is the foundation for each student's success and all adults on campus have a responsibility to impress upon students the importance of good school attendance and enlist the assistance of the parent/guardian when attendance is a problem. Attendance will be taken every period by each teacher.
One day of make-up work is allowed for each day of absence. It will be the student's responsibility to request the work. Students need to clear absences upon their return to school. Parents/guardians may write a note or phone in the excused absence by calling (510) 317-3819.

Tardies

Tardies are an important behavioral issue as they relate to: respect for self and others, disruption of the learning process for others, and pre-vocational skills.
Tardy 1 and 2 - Teacher warns and counsels student.

Tardy 3 and up - Teacher assigns teacher detention. Teacher makes parent contact.

Chronic/excessive tardies that continue despite teacher intervention and consequence will be referred to the Vice Principal for further action.

Permission to Leave School

Bohannon is a closed campus. Students requesting to leave campus should bring a note from home when they need to be excused. Teachers should send them to the Attendance Office with a pass. The Attendance Office will prepare an "Off Grounds" pass and sign the student out. Students need to sign in at the Attendance Office upon returning to school from an absence.

Hall Passes
Students should use the restrooms before school, during break, lunch, and after school. Occasionally, a student may need to leave class during the class period. Every student who leaves a class and is in the halls during class time should have a hall pass signed by his teacher.

Communicating Student Performance

Report Cards
  • Report cards will be computer generated, using high school model as format, and mailed home for the second, third, and fourth quarter.
  • Report cards will be issued quarterly.
  • Report Card Nights are provided to meet personally with parents in November of each school year.

LIFESKILLS | SELF-MANAGEMENT | CITIZENSHIP

High schools assign a grade for "citizenship". The elementary report card creates a report on each child's "self-management" skills.
Middle schools will be initiating LifeSkills behavioral/citizenship expectations.
The following marks will be used:

"O" = Outstanding
"S" = Satisfactory
"N" = Needs improvement

School Discipline Procedures

  • We want to have pride in ourselves, each other, our students, and our school.
  • We wish to create a strong culture of caring and high expectations of performance for both students and adults in our school community.
  • We believe this will occur in a school where expectations for behavior and performance are clear to all and enforced at all times.
  • We believe, developmentally, middle school children feel safer with, and want, structure, rules, and guidelines even though they may protest them.
  • We know that rules are only as good as the consistency by which they are used.

Teacher Detention A student must have a minimum 24 hour notice of detention. It is the student's responsibility to inform his/her parents of the date and length of the detention.
A student who is absent on the day of detention will serve the detention on the day he/she returns to school. An individual teacher may keep a student after school for up to ten minutes without prior notice.

Teacher Suspension (ON CAMPUS)
A teacher may suspend any pupil from the teacher's class for the day of the suspension and the day following (up to two days). The teacher must immediately inform the student what the suspension is for. The pupil must be given an opportunity to explain his/her version of the facts (due process). The teacher must immediately report the suspension to the Vice Principal on a referral for appropriate supervision of the student to occur.
The teacher must make a parent/guardian contact and ask the parent or guardian to attend a parent-teacher conference regarding the suspension prior to the student's return to class. If practicable, the school counselor or administrator may attend the conference.

SCHOOL-WIDE DETENTIONS / SATURDAY SCHOOL
Teachers and campus security may use a referral to inform the Vice Principal of more serious rules violations. (See Discipline Policy).
School-wide detentions will be held once a week - Wednesday, 12:20 to 1:20pm.

Return From School Suspension
We have agreed to initiate a "Re-Entry" procedure for suspended students.
Upon return from an off campus suspension, a student may meet with the counselor and/or administrator to assist with a successful return to school. The purpose is to offer the child a contact with an adult mentor who will assist in a supportive and positive way, the child's return to school.
