Our Library

Welcome to the web site for the Hesperian School Library. My name is Tricia Svenningsen, better known as Mrs. S. I am the Library Media Technician. I have taken care of the Hesperian Library for 16 years.

If you have not been by to see our new library please do visit. It is so pretty, bright, and spacious. The Hesperian students and staff love it. Construction was started in Rooms 17 and 18 during the summer of 2006. The wall between the two rooms was removed and doors were repositioned. Our new library is now the size of two classrooms. New floors were put in, new furniture, new shelving, and new lighting. We are still waiting for a few touch-ups and final items but the library was able to open as scheduled on Sept. 18, 2006. All of the changes have occurred thanks to the Measure E bond that our community voted for in 2004. The community surveys put libraries as a priority. Our students will benefit for years to come thanks to the support. If you are interested in seeing the architects floor plan click on the Showcase button at the left side of this screen. Under "Upcoming Events" there is a PDF file you can open from that page

In the new library we will explore fiction, non-fiction and reference materials. Through the use of games, story time and library skills activities, students learn how to find answers to their questions. We also want to share a love of reading that is the foundation for a bright future.

Parents/guardians of enrolled students may check out additional books for their child/children. Stop in to fill out an application and you may begin checking out that very day. Parents may check out up to 10 books and keep them for two weeks.

Please check below for the hours that we are open.

Until then, browse around our web site. Click on any of the buttons in the left margin. We hope you find it useful and fun. One word of warning, we try to take every precaution to use kid-safe sites but if you do find anything inappropriate please contact me immediately. You can also e-mail me with questions, suggestions or requests: tsvenningsen@slzusd.org

The more I read the better I get. The better I get the more fun it is.

Care of Books

1) Find a safe place to keep your book. It should be high enough so little children and dogs can not reach the book by themselves. By using the same safe place you will be able to locate the book when it is time to return it.

2) Keep water, juice and food away from books. Liquids and crumbs cause pages to stick together, tear and mold. Placing books and snack items together in a backpack causes the most damage to our library books. Put the books into a plastic bag first.

3) Remember our books are reading books not coloring books. Small children sometimes aren't able to tell the difference. Please monitor the books use and keep crayons, pencils, markers and scissors away from the pages.

4) Use a bookmark. Please do not turn down the corner of the pages, bend back the spine or lay one book inside another. Bent pages tear easily, and when book spines are broken, the book loses pages.

5) Turn pages from the outside corners. When lifting the page from the center of the book near the spine the weight of the page causes more tears.

6) Clean hands equal clean books.

Wish List

Are you a Hesperian Parent/Grandparent who loves to garden? Would you be interested in helping us create and maintain a garden just outside our new library? We have a lovely area for our students but it is in need of much tender loving care.

Other items we can always use:

Reams of xerox paper

Colored pencils

Boxes of Kleenex

Jumbo plastic bags for students to carry books in. This keeps books safe from the rain, and from juice and water spills that happen in backpacks.

The title of a book that you recommend for our library

Volunteers who would like to help with shelving books and repairing damaged items

Also, Hesperian parents/grandparents, do you have a favorite story you love reading to your child? I know other students at Hesperian would love to hear that story also. Contact Mrs. S to make arrangements to read aloud during your student's library time.
