SLZUSD Recognizes Accomplishments in English Development and World Languages

107 Students Earn Reclassification and  14 Students Earn Biliteracy Awards in 2023.
On May 31, 2023, the San Lorenzo Unified School District held the Annual Pathways to Bi-literacy Awards to celebrate our students who have been reclassified as Fluent English Proficient and those who have earned The California State Seal of Biliteracy.

107 – Students Reclassified as Fluent English Proficient
14 - High school students received the Official California State Seal of Biliteracy

English learners who have demonstrated proficiency in English and met language proficiency and academic targets are “reclassified” and considered fluent English proficient. The District’s goal is for every English Learner in our district to reclassify.

To earn the Seal, students must demonstrate English competency by meeting specific state requirements, demonstrating fluency in a language other than English and receiving good grades in all English classes required for high school graduation. World language competency must be demonstrated through a four-year course of study in a world language or by passing a test (such as the Advanced Placement exam or a school district language examination).

On behalf of the District’s English Language Learner Program and District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC), San Lorenzo Unified congratulates our Reclassified students, those who are on the Pathway to Biliteracy and our high school seniors, celebrating their linguistic accomplishments in earning the State Seal of Biliteracy. Congratulations!

The California State Seal of Biliteracy

The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, district or county office of education in recognition to students who have studied and attained a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading and writing in one or more languages in addition to English, by the time they graduate.

To qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy High School students must meet the criteria established by Assembly Bill 815 (Brownley, Chapter 618, Statues of 2011) it became effective January 1st, 2012

The Seal of Biliteracy encourages students to pursue biliteracy, honors the skills our students attain, and can be evidence of skills that are attractive to future employers and college admissions offices. Our vision is to help students recognize the value of their academic success and see the tangible benefits of being bilingual.
