GATE

The Gifted and Talented Education program (GATE) is designed and coordinated by the San Lorenzo Unified School District. The program is available to identified gifted and talented students capable of achieving significantly beyond the level of their peers. Funding has been provided to make available supplemental enrichment classes after school at a variety of sites to those identified as GATE students. Qualification in the Gifted and Talented Education Program is determined by the results of the Ravens test which is administered to all second grade students with written parent permission. Third, fourth and fifth grade teachers may also refer students to take the Ravens test with written parent permission. If the student is found eligible, his/her guardians are notified and provided a permission form. When the permission form is returned to the GATE office, the student will be enrolled in the GATE program.

Read 180

Read 180 is an intensive reading intervention program designed to meet the needs of students who are reading at least one year below grade level. It is the only program of its kind that uses assessment data to effectively differentiate instruction. The Read 180 Topic Software continually adjusts the level of instruction based on student performance. Reports and periodic checkpoints identify student needs and direct the teacher to resources for individualizing instruction.

The SST meets to discuss the child’s needs and explore possible interventions. Parents and teachers may initiate a referral by filling out the proper paperwork and submitting it to the resource teacher.

Student Council

Student Council is held monthly for student representatives in grades 3-5.Officers are elected in the fall of each school year. Offices are open to all students in grades 4-5 in good academic standing and with no behavior issues. Any suspensions will disqualify students from participating in Student Council.
