CalSTRS - Post-retirement Earning Limitations

Postretirement earnings limit imposed on retired CalSTRS members has changed due to the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act of 2013. The annual earnings limit for the 2012-2013 school year is $40,011.

Separation-from-service requirement:

A member who retires on or after January 1, 2013, and earns any compensation from CalSTRS-covered employment (i.e. substitute teaching) for the first 180 calendar days after their retirement, regardless of age at the time of retirement, will have their benefits reduced dollar for dollar by the compensation earned.

After 180 calendar days, retired members may return to CalSTRS-covered employment, as long as they do not earn more than the annual earnings limit.
