School Choice

Program Description & Process

No Child Left Behind requires the state and school districts to review annually the academic progress of federally funded Title 1 schools and to identify schools in need of improvement. Parents have a the right, when the school is listed as a School Choice site, to select another school in the District not listed as a School Choice site. The School Choice sites are listed in a letter sent to families attending Program Improvement schools and is given to all new families enrolling into the school. These letters usually prepared for dissemination the week before Spring Break. For two weeks after Spring Break parents are able to submit School Choice forms with their requests of another school. The decisions are made in July and parents are notified by phone. Placement determinations are based on space availability. School bus transportation is provided for Elementary students depending on bus route existence, according to the new address. Middle school students can be provided with an AC Transit bus pass every month. AC transit bus passes are not required to be replaced if lost. Special Education students may participate in the School Choice process, provided programs are available to their specific needs. If you have any questions regarding School Choice, call Maria Camarillo at 510-317-4774.
