More Information on Small Learning Communities

Parent information nights for in-coming ninth graders will be held from 7:00 to 8:00 pm on February 20 at Edendale Middle School, February 21 at Bohannon Middle School, and February 22 at Washington Manor Middle School.

Small Learning Communities are an alternative to the traditional high school program. Each provides a rigorous college preparatory curriculum that meets the UC and CSU admission requirements. Each is organized around a particular theme, and each encourages students to learn by doing. The small size of these SLCs means students have close, individual, and on-going relationships with their teachers and fellow students. No one gets lost in the crowd.

Students are assigned to an SLC or traditional program based on their expressed preference and available space. There are currently no entrance requirements for any SLC, and students may apply to attend an SLC at any high school in the district. Students do not have to choose an SLC; traditional high school programs are also in place at both San Lorenzo High and Arroyo High.

Students in SLCs may still participate in sports teams and GATE class offerings, and attend whole school activities like dances. Each SLC has a structure for student governance, and SLC students may also run for student government at their particular campus. Elective courses may vary depending on the schedule restrictions of each SLC, but each does offer at least one full foreign language program and a selection of electives that meet the UC admission requirements.
