Principal's Message

Recent Events
The Grant School tradition of creating activities for parents and students to share and benefit from is in full swing. On February 27th we had Family Math and Science Night. It was a smashing success. Over 175 children and parents attended. PTA family movie night was March 7. We had a full house. On Saturday, March 8, we had a strong turn out for Garden Day. We are one of the few elementary schools with a working vegetable and flower garden and also a lovely memorial garden.

Reading
On the subject of Reading — Your child can do many types of reading.  Most reading a child does by themselves is at their reading level.  Another activity is for parents to read aloud from a book that is too difficult for the child to read by themselves.  When you read aloud enjoy the sounds of the language.   Allow yourself to bring the story to life through your vocal variety, pacing and intonation.  Allow your child to sit back and listen. Kindergarteners through fifth graders benefit from read alouds.  It improves comprehension and vocabulary at all ages.

Another type of reading is when your child is reading at their instructional level.  This usually occurs at school, but can certainly occur at home too.  Special strategies are used when reading at the instructional level. Talk to your child’s teacher about those strategies. In closing please help your child to build stamina to read for long periods of time. “How can I build on what my child can already do?” If your child can sustain reading for 20-30 minutes, at their reading level, set a goal to extend that time to 35 minutes, then 45, then 60, then 75 minutes and more!
