Criteria for Eligibility and Related Services
STATE CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY
Federal and state laws identify specific disabling conditions that entitle a child to special education service if it is determined that the disability adversely affects their educational performance. The disability must fall under one of the following categories:
- Autism
- Deafness
- Deaf-Blindness
- Established Medical Disability (Age 0-5)
- Hard of Hearing
- Mental Retardation
- Multiple Disabilities
- Orthopedic Impairment
- Other Health Impairment
- Emotional Disturbance
- Specific Learning Disability
- Speech and Language Impairment
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Visual Impairment, including blindness
RELATED SERVICES
Related services are defined as "transportation, and such developmental, corrective, and other supportive services, as are required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from special education . . . " The following are included in the definition of related services;
- Speech-language pathology and audiology services
- Psychological services
- Physical and occupational therapy
- Adaptive Physical Education
- Early identification and assessment of disabilities in children
- Counseling services, including rehabilitation counseling
- Orientation and mobility services
- Medical services for diagnostic or evaluation purposes
- School health services
- Parent counseling and training
- Transportation (Section 300.24(a))
