A new agreement between San Lorenzo Schools and California State University East Bay gives SLZUSD students confidence they can attend the university if they meet basic requirements.
The San Lorenzo Unified School District Board of Education on Nov. 19 unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding with Cal State East Bay in Hayward that will provide automatic admission to all district seniors who have at least a 2.5 grade point average and meet course requirements.
The pact means that all qualifying SLZUSD students will receive an acceptance letter and be invited to tour the CSUEB campus. The university reserves the right to curtail admission to “impacted” programs, meaning those that have reached their full student capacity, but no programs are at that point now.
“We are excited to bring this opportunity to our students,” said Dr. Renee Lama, assistant superintendent of Educational Services, as she introduced the proposal to the board. “It’s a way for Cal State East Bay to get more folks to come and go to school there, but also partner with neighboring school districts.”
CSUEB, like all California State University and University of California campuses, requires incoming undergraduate students to have successfully completed a series of “A to G” classes in high school. These are: history/social science, English, mathematics, a laboratory science, a foreign language, visual and performing arts and college-preparatory electives.
This agreement is likely to increase interaction between CSUEB and SLZUSD high schools, providing the university a greater conduit to share information about its programs to counselors, students, families, parent associations and clubs.
SLZUSD students who seek to attend CSUEB will still need to submit a Cal State Apply application and pay a $70 application fee. Information about the application process is available here.
The district sent an email to 259 eligible students on Nov. 25, informing them that they would be receiving the guaranteed admission offer from CSUEB for Fall 2025. The university followed with a letter of its own, informing students of a virtual informational event on Dec. 5.
