APPOINTMENT OF INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT
A message from Board President Penny Peck

On behalf of the Board of Education, it is with great pleasure that I share the news that last night we approved the appointment of Bruce Harter, Ph.D. to serve as Interim Superintendent of the San Lorenzo Unified School District, effective December 19, 2018.  As you know, following the retirement of Superintendent Fred Brill in October, the Board of Education began the process of conducting an extensive search for the District’s next leader.  This is an exciting opportunity for our District to find the well-suited executive to help our District maintain on its path of continuous improvement for staff and students. 

 

Dr. Harter will oversee District operations, reporting to the Board of Education, until our executive search is completed and the next Superintendent is in place.  He brings to our District over 35 years of experience in public education, including most recently serving as the Superintendent of Schools in the West Contra Costa Unified School District.  He began his career as a math and science teacher in Detroit public schools and has held a number of key administrative positions, including middle and high school principalships.  His complete resume can be found on our website.

 

Thank you for joining us in welcoming Dr. Harter to the District. He will begin meeting employees and key community members this week and will visit each school site during the first week after winter break. We are confident you will enjoy meeting and working with him.

 

Update on Executive Search

Securing our permanent superintendent is one of the Board’s greatest responsibilities. To help us with this work, we have retained Leadership Associates, a premier executive search firm with extensive expertise in public education.   

 

All members of the school community will be encouraged to share their thoughts on critical leadership characteristics to help guide our search.  Below we share a timeline of activities, and hope that you will find a way to add your thoughts and voice to the process.

 

Dec. 4

Board met with consultants to review process, timeline and discuss essential superintendent leadership characteristics

Jan.

Search firm to host meetings with employees, parents and community leaders to receive input; also posting an online survey to accommodate as many people as possible

Feb. – March

Open position, screen candidates, coordinate interviews with Board of Education

March

Plan to approve finalist and approve contract in a regular meeting of the Board of Education

 

Our Board of Education will vigilantly search for a leader who can easily and naturally become part of our school community and dedicated team of education professionals.  Thank you for your kind attention to this message.
