Help Us Review Elementary ELA/ELD Instructional Materials Options for Pilot

Help us review Elementary English Language Arts/English Language Development instructional materials!

We are beginning the cycle of adopting a comprehensive English Language Arts (ELA) program that will include instructional materials for reading, writing, and Designated English Language Development (DELD) for our elementary schools.

The five programs that we are considering all meet the following criteria:

  • Are comprehensive reading and writing programs
  • Are aligned with the CA Common Core standards
  • Are based on the principles of the science of reading
  • Have aligned Designated ELD instructional materials
  • Have equivalent Spanish language programs
  • Have aligned Tier II Intervention materials/programs

Our timeline

Spring 2025
  • Certificated staff, classified staff, families, and interested community members can review the possible programs online or by appointment at an elementary school site or the District Office. A committee of teachers will review feedback from all sources and narrow the options down to the two best for SLZUSD to investigate further. These two programs will move forward to the pilot phase.
Fall 2025-Winter 2026
  • Classroom teachers who sign up to pilot will be trained in the two selected programs and will teach one unit from each (3-6 weeks, depending on the program). Staff, families and the community will receive another opportunity to review the two final options. This pilot committee of teachers will discuss their experiences, survey feedback and determine an adoption recommendation to present to the Board.
Fall 2026
  • The new ELA/ELD instructional materials will be implemented at all SLZUSD elementary schools.
